VIRMA SYMONS – LEGAL PRACTICE DIRECTOR
Virma completed her degrees in Arts and Law at the University of Philippines in 1990. She then practised in the areas of commercial law, corporate law and labour law, while working for various law firms in the Philippines. Virma became in-house counsel for corporations in the transportation, mining and banking sectors. Virma attended the Ivy League university–Cornell University in New York–where she completed her Master of Laws in 1998 majoring in corporate finance, banking and regulation, bankruptcy business combinations, international business transactions, secured transactions, foreign investments and commercial real estate development.
Virma then moved to Australia in 1998 where she completed further studies at Murdoch University before being admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in 2002. Since then Virma has practised in the areas of family law, property law, commercial law, wills and deceased estates and commercial litigation.
Virma provides advice and legal services in the following specific areas of family law:
- Children’s issues
- Financial/property settlements
- Parenting plans
- Binding financial agreements before or during cohabitation and after separation
- Spousal or de facto maintenance
Virma also handles matters relating to the care and protection of children.

- Retail commercial and industrial leases and the assignment, variation and extension of such leases
- Business/property settlements and conveyancing
- Trusts and Estates
- Caveat and withdrawal of caveats

- Banking including review of mortgage documents and providing independent legal advice for bank guarantees
- International law
Virma is a member of the Family Law Practitioners’ Association of Western Australia.
Virma has a special interest in international business transactions and project finance.
GARTH MELVOLD- HEAD OF FAMILY LAW DIVISION – CHILDREN
Garth obtained his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Notre Dame. Garth has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Politics and a Bachelor of Education degree. He also has a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. Garth has an interest in aviation and holds a pilot’s licence.
Garth practises mainly in the following areas of law:
- Children’s issues: live with, spend time with, relocation and recovery
- Financial/Property settlements: alteration of property interests

ERICA KIM – SOLICITOR
Erica completed her Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Sydney in 1988. Erica then decided to become a lawyer and obtained a Bachelor of Laws from Macquarie University in Sydney.
Erica works in the building industry.
Erica is interested in the following areas of Commercial and Property Law:
- Contracts for sale of land and sale of business – drafting and review
- Retail, commercial and industrial leases
- Property development to include strata development
- Building contracts
- Liquor licensing
Erica is fluent in Korean and has been handling a lot of legal work for the Korean community in Western Australia.
EVAN ENNIS-JOHN – SOLICITOR
Evan completed his Bachelor of Laws studies at Murdoch University in 2014 and was admitted as a legal practitioner in Western Australia in October 2015.
Evan practises in the areas of commercial litigation, contract law, property conveyancing, dispute resolution, wills and estate.
Evan is the only person in the university’s history to hold both positions of President of the Murdoch Student Law Society, and Chief Justice of the Moot Court Bench.
Evan was also a finalist in the Murdoch Student Law Society Negotiation Competition in 2013, as well as a member of Murdoch’s 2014 Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition team.
Evan has appeared as counsel in the Magistrates Court, District Court, Supreme Court, Federal Court and State Administrative Tribunal.
Evan also handles FIRB application for extension of grant.
DANIEL NUGAWELA – SOLICITOR
Dan was admitted as a legal practitioner in Western Australia in September 2016. He has a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice from the Australian National University. He also holds a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Notre Dame, and a Bachelor of Health Science and Bachelor of Biomedical Science degrees from the University of Western Australia.
Dan practises in the areas of taxation, self-managed superannuation funds, bankruptcy, corporate restructure, partnerships, estate planning, probate matters, contract law and personal injury.
JOEL STEINBERG – LAW GRADUATE – OFFICE MANAGER
Joel completed his qualifications in Tourism and Hotel Management in 1997 and spent 5 years in senior Management of International Hotels before being a founding shareholder of Leisure Inn Hotels, where he spent 3 years as Chief Executive Officer before moving to Adelaide where he owned his own hotel.
In 2010 Joel returned to studies at Murdoch University and commenced with Symons and Co in our Legal Cadetship Programme in July 2012.
Joel graduated with a Bachelor of Laws in September 2015 and a Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice at Australian National University 2016.
Joel is an associate member of the Family Law Practitioners’ Association of Western Australia. However, he is not admitted to practise law in Australia.
Joel is also a member of the Australian Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators, and is an accredited Mediator.
Joel is undertaking his Graduate Diploma in Finance in 2017 and assists clients in all non-legal work, as well as general management of the firm under the guidance of the Practice Director.
